Provost's Biography

Carol Traupman-Carr ’86 serves her alma mater as provost of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Theological Seminary, beginning her tenure on May 9, 2022. For the previous twenty years, Traupman-Carr has served as the associate chief academic officer, most recently as vice provost.  Prior to moving into the administration, Dr. Traupman-Carr was a full-time faculty member in the music department.  She still holds tenure and the rank of professor of music.

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is in her blood.  As a first-generation college student, she was the first in her family to graduate from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV College, but not the last.  Other ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV graduates in her family include her brother Michael (Class of 1988), cousin Lisa (Class of 1991), sister-in-law Lori (Class of 1987), husband David (Class of 2008 -- non-traditional learner), son Andrew (Class of 2019), and cousin Matt (Class of 2013).  Her sister Kathy also attended as a post-baccalaureate student to earn teacher certification.

Among Dr. T-C’s (as she is often called) accomplishments and initiatives include:

  • The creation of Advancing Into ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV (AIM), a summerbridge program for incoming undergraduate students
  • Building and launching a prior learning assessment (PLA) program at the institution
  • Co-creating and co-facilitating a higher education leaders program within the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (LVAIC), of which ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is a part
  • Co-chaired the 2018 Middle States re-accreditation self-study, and authored several substantive change submissions
  • Authored the original accreditation submission to the National Association of Schools of Music
  • Shepherded numerous curricular changes and additions, working with other academic administrators and faculty

In the classroom, Dr. T-C has regularly taught courses in her fields of expertise, including college writing, music history, music theory, music analysis, form in music, and beginning piano techniques.  She has guided a number of students through independent studies and research projects.  As a scholar, Traupman-Carr has written more than a dozen original brass arrangements (primarily for brass quintet), has published various articles and book reviews, and co-authored a chapter on program assessment with two ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV faculty colleagues.  She continues to serve as the choir director at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.

In March 2018, Dr. T-C launched Alpha Alpha Alpha, or Tri-Alpha, the nation’s first and only national honor society for first-generation college students.  The honor society is now incorporated and the national office is housed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.  As of June 2022, there were over 135 chapters in 35 states of the union. Dr. T-C serves as the co-advisor for the Alpha chapter at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and as president of the national board of the honor society.
Traupman-Carr received a B.A.in social science and a B.MUS. in music (concentrations in music education and performance) from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, an M.A. and a Ph.D. in musicology from Cornell University, specializing in mid-nineteenth-century Italian comic opera. In 2015-2016, she completed the Senior Leadership Academy of the Council of Independent Colleges/AALI.
